PARENTS ARE PEOPLE, TOO

The college years are an exciting and stimulating time in the lives of students and their parents. In addition to preparing for a professional career, students face numerous challenges and opportunities to learn about themselves and the world Parents   around them. During this time, students make important life    decisions, develop their personal and professional identities,    interests and values, and evolve from adolescence to    adulthood. At Student Support Services, we want to help    prepare your son or daughter for an experience of a lifetime at the University of Alabama.

Rest assured, our staff members have helped numerous students navigate through the college transition process from leaving familiar family territory, experiencing more demanding academic requirements than in high school, to managing new freedoms and responsibilites and learning to live in a world of differences. If you are the parent of a beginning college student, The Freshman Year Experience: Resource Guide for Parents will be very beneficial to you.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is essential to the counseling and advising realtionship we establish and maintain with students who seek our services. We adhere to confidentiality guidelines mandated by law (FERPA - Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.) UA FERPA guidelines can be found here. We understand and appreciate that parents often wish to be involved in their student's college experience; however, the confidentiality guidelines do not permit us to talk with parents regarding their student's participation in our program. We do welcome calls from parents and are able to discuss:

bullet   General adjustment and academic related issues many college students face
bullet   The range of services provided through SSS
bullet   How to refer your son or daughter to SSS
bullet   Other UA and community resources that may be helpful

Please feel free to call or e-mail any SSS staff member if you have questions or concerns. We would love to hear from you!
