Welcome to Student Support Services at the University of Alabama. As a federally funded TRiO program housed in the Center for Teaching and Learning, our mission is to provide an array of academic and personal support services to first generation college students with limited incomes and/or disabilities. Our comprehensive services are designed to increase persistence and graduation rates by promoting student development through opportunities to grow personally, professionally, and academically. The SSS program at UA recently held its 30-Year Anniversary Celebration recognizing 30 years of empowering students. At Student Support Services, your success begins here!

Eligibility

Participation in the TRiO SSS Program is open to students who meet the federal eligibility requirements outlined by the U.S. Department of Education. To qualify for program participation, students must be U.S. citizens, enrolled or accepted for enrollment at UA, and have a need for academic support in order to persist toward graduation. The SSS program is limited to 200 participants per year. An application may be submitted online, mailed to the SSS office, or delivered in person to 225 Osband Hall.

Counseling and Advising

The importance of having a counselor who knows each student personally is of inestimable value to SSS participants.  By providing academic, financial aid, graduate school, career, and personal counseling, Student Support Services gives students a distinct advantage in their quest for success.  A professional and educational background in student counseling coupled with a genuine commitment to the TRIO objectives of helping students overcome financial, class, social, and cultural barriers to higher education are the qualities that define our counselors.

Tutoring

One of the most valuable and important components of SSS is the tutoring program.  Each semester, tutoring is made available for an array of challenging courses ranging from the sciences and humanities to business.  SSS participants may receive one-on-one tutoring once a week, or more if needed, at no cost.  Our tutors bring with them the highest academic credentials on the UA campus, namely, Honors program participation and inclusion on the Dean's and President's Lists.  Our tutoring team offers the best personalized tutoring available.
