About the Math Tournament

Gordon Palmer Hall

Each fall the University of Alabama Mathematics Department hosts a math tournament for excellent high school students from all over Alabama and throughout the southeast.  Schools are placed in three divisions according to enrollment.  The Fall 2001 tournament will be held on Saturday, October 13th.  Check back for a detailed schedule of the day's events.

The tournament consists of a written exam and a ciphering competition.  Each student takes a 2-hour, 40-question exam, and the top members of each team compete in the ciphering competition, which consists of four rounds of five questions each and involves speed as well as knowledge.  Questions for both the written and ciphering portions come from pre-calculus mathematics.

Awards (in the form of trophies and certificates) are given to the top six teams in each division and to the top 20 individual students.  In addition to this, scholarships and cash awards are available to some of the top students.
