Extended Rankings

Extended Rankings represent the simplest procedure for ranking each of the candidates/alternatives in an election.

Regardless of the particular voting method, the idea behind Extended Rankings is the same:

1. Run the election using a particular voting method.
2. Rank the candidates/alternatives based on their performance on whatever measure the particular voting method uses to determine the winner.

For instance, in a Borda Count election, Extended Rankings would give first place to the candidate with the largest Borda Count total, second place to the candidate with the second largest Borda Count total, and so on, with last place going to the candidate with the smallest Borda Count total. Similarly, in a Plurality with Elimination election, Extended Rankings would give first place to the candidate remaining after all the others were eliminated, second place to the next-to-last candidate eliminated, and so on, with last place going to the first candidate eliminated.

Applying this Extended Ranking procedure to each of the five voting methods covered here, we have:

Extended Plurality
Candidates are ranked by the number of first place votes. example

Extended Plurality with Elimination
Candidates are ranked in REVERSE order of elimination. example

Extended Borda Count
Candidates are ranked by their Borda Count totals. example

Extended Pairwise Comparisons
Candidates are ranked by the number of points received in head-to-head comparisons with all the other candidates (1 pt. for a win, 0.5 pts. for a tie). example

Extended Approval Voting example
Candidates are ranked by the number of approval votes they received.
