What is the Harris Hall A & S Living-Learning Community?
Freshmen in the Harris Hall A & S Living-Learning Community enjoy all the benefits and opportunities of a large university while they live in a small community, sharing classes and friendships with those with whom they also share living space. Harris Hall A & S Living-Learning Community brings together students with similar academic interests and is designed to foster success at The University of Alabama by supporting learning, professional development, and community involvement during the important first year. It is modeled after the highly successful Parker-Adams Freshman Year Program of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Who can be admitted and how?
A student is eligible who has been admitted as an entering freshman into the College of Arts & Sciences, completed a Residential Communities application, and paid the deposit. There are no specifically required ACT/SAT scores or high school grades. College of Arts and Sciences students who are interested in interdisciplinary study or who plan careers in education, law, and medicine or other health fields are given preference in admission.. If you are accepted into this program, your room assignment will be Harris Hall, and not the hall that you may have previously preferred. Any changes in your college during the first semester will not affect your residence in Harris.
Does this program cost more?You pay regular University costs. The cost of residing in Harris is the same as many other residence halls. You will get additional benefits at no additional cost.
What is Harris Hall like?
It is a three-story residence hall located near classroom buildings, Mary Burke cafeteria, sorority row, Bryant-Denny Stadium, and the Quad. There are common rooms and a small kitchen. The second and third floors have double rooms and community baths, while there are suites with shared baths and a few private rooms on the first floor. Harris Hall houses 196 students. The rooms in Harris are spacious and measure approximately eleven feet by fourteen feet with one windows and blind measuring 42 by 64 inches. All double rooms have two standard twin beds, two desks, and one dresser. Each room has wood flooring and non-built-in furniture which can be easily rearranged. The building has a common area kitchen, and each room has a combination refrigerator/ freezer/microwave unit. Harris Hall Living-Learning Community is co-educational; men and women live on different floors. All University-wide regulations are enforced. A hall director and resident assistants live in the hall and a faculty-in-residence is planned.
